A Plaid Cymru has expressed his sympathy at all the homes and business owners affected by flooding over the weekend.
Peredur Owen Griffiths said it was “devastating” to see so many communities flooded, especially so soon after the storms of 2020.
The South Wales East MS will be spending much of Monday visiting the people and places affected by Storm Bert, including Cwmtillery where there is a reported coal tip slide.
He said: “It is devastating to see people flooded once again across my region. Many homes and businesses had not long got back to normality after Storm Dennis and now this happened.
“There remains many questions about the warnings that were issued and whether they were accurate enough.
“There are also question marks over the adequacy of the emergency response in some areas. Did people get the help they needed ahead of the storm and when water levels were rising?
“I will be out listening to people in the affected communities to see what they think and what they want to happen in future.”
He added: “These freak storms are happening with greater frequency and when they happen, the response is sometimes left wanting.
“Have we done all we can to mitigate against freak weather events?
“This is why Plaid Cymru called for a public inquiry into the storms of 2020 so that lessons could be learnt and measures put in place to reduce the likelihood of these storms ravaging our communities.
“The need for such an inquiry is clearly still there.”
