A Plaid Cymru MS has called for the Labour Government in Wales to support a campaign that would hit financially the companies sustaining the “Netanyahu war machine.”

Peredur Owen Griffiths MS, who represents the South Wales East region, called for a divestment campaign as a means of delivering peace in the Middle East before hostilities escalate further.

Speaking during First Minister’s questions, Peredur said: “Since the escalation of hostilities in Gaza, we have seen slaughter and sorrow on an unimaginable scale.

“The official death toll in Gaza has now exceeded 41,000.

“That violence is now spilling over into Lebanon, with the real prospect of conflict engulfing the whole region.

“Israel has not listened to the many countries that have called for a ceasefire.”

He added: “Before it's too late, can you not see that there's a need to use all the levers possible to persuade the companies involved in supplying materials used to suppress Palestinians and fuel the Netanyahu war machine?

“First Minister, do you agree that a campaign of divestment, to make companies think twice before they supply Israel with weapons, is long overdue?”

In reply, the Labour First Minister said: “The UK Government is responsible for making sure that that happens—it's not an area that I can get involved with.”
