Reacting to the news that an extension on the opencast mine at Ffos-y-Fran, near Merthyr Tydfil, has been refused, Peredur Owen Griffiths MS said: “This is welcome news for the many local residents whose lives have been blighted by open cast mining in their community.

“This operation – the largest of its kind in the UK - has led to an intolerable impact upon air quality, noise and dust pollution.

“This decision to refuse the extension is a huge relief for so many, especially as it is located within close proximity of homes, schools and playgrounds.”

The Plaid Cymru South East Wales MS added: “Apart from the local environmental factors at play, coal has a devastating impact on the environment and climate change.

“Coal runs contrary to Wales’ global responsibility and our commitments to decarbonise.

“Today’s news is not just welcome for the people of Merthyr but for anyone who is concerned about the environment and the climate crisis.”
