Don’t Delay on Tackling Dangerous Dogs, Peredur Urges Labour Government

A Plaid Cymru MS has urged the Labour Government to introduce measures around responsible dog ownership sooner rather than later.

Peredur Owen Griffiths said it was vital that recent changes in the Labour Cabinet and changes that will inevitably happen after the resignation of the First Minister, do not stall progress.

Peredur represents the South Wales East region where 10-year-old Jack Lis from Penyrheol died from a dog attack in 2021.

In a question to Rural Affairs Cabinet Secretary Huw Irranca-Davies, Peredur said: “There needs to be a wholescale change in the culture of dog ownership that places more onus on the owner.

“This is especially needed in light of the increased dog ownership numbers and the number of dog attacks in recent years.

“I have pushed the government on this matter and your predecessor subsequently held a summit and workshop on the matter.

“Can you reassure that this issue has not been placed on the back burner and that this will be treated as a priority?

“Can you also give an indication of a timeline for change on this matter? In recent weeks there have been more dog attacks in my region so we really cannot afford to kick this can down the road any longer.”

In response, the Cabinet Secretary replied that the government were committed to keeping the matter “front and centre.”
