Plaid Cymru’s Peredur Owen Griffiths welcomed two leading speakers on the issue of women and drugs during the latest meeting of the Cross Party Group on Drug Use and Addiction.
The meeting in the Pierhead building focused on ‘Rethinking Drug Treatment for Women’ and featured the thoughts of Anna Millington from the M2M network and Maria Cripps from Cranstoun.
Both used their personal experiences to discuss women and mothers and the barriers they face in accessing substance use services and support.
The Cross Party Group was set up shortly after Peredur was elected to the Senedd. Peredur is chair of the group and secretariat support is provided by the pioneering drugs charity Kaleidoscope.
Peredur said: “It was a typically thought-provoking session of the CPG on an aspect we have not explored too much to date. Both Anna and Maria provided excellent and heartfelt talks about the current landscape for women and mothers accessing drug treatment.
“Because a large part of the criminal justice system has been designed by men without much thought about the consequences for women and mothers, provision and outcomes for women have historically been very poor.
“Anna and Maria both identified a number of ways in which the system can improve which was useful to note.
“As a cross party group, we intend to take up some of the issues and suggestions at a later date when we will hopefully have Welsh Government participation at a future meeting.”
