A Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd has spoken out against the Tory Westminster Government in a mass anti-racism rally held in the Welsh capital.
Peredur Owen Griffiths, who represents the South Wales East region, spoke at event on Saturday organised to mark the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Peredur told the crowd of several hundred people that the Tories are creating the conditions for extreme far-right groups to expand and flourish in parts of the UK with their dangerous rhetoric about refugees.
He said: “Friends, we are living in very dangerous times. The far-right are getting bolder and louder.
“They are twisting the conditions to suit their own vile and divisive agenda. In their world, the people who don’t look like them become the enemy.
“They’re making scapegoats out of refugees, of the vulnerable, and of the people who don’t fit their template.
“They’re laying the blame for things like our struggling economy, the increasing cost of living, and so much more, on refugees and anyone else who doesn’t fit in their world.
“But we know the truth. None of this would be possible without a Tory Government who have created the conditions for these right wing extremists to flourish.”
He added: “There’s hope because my party Plaid Cymru will continue to fight this dangerous bill with all our might.
“There’s hope, because of events like this, that show there are still plenty of good people about, there is still humanity and there is still compassion left in our society.
“There’s hope because the Tories will soon have to answer for their divisive rhetoric and their many failings at the ballot box. After 13 years of Tory Westminster rule, that day cannot come soon enough.
“Friends… you know what to do when the time comes.”
