Time to Compensate 1950s Women – Peredur

A Plaid Cymru Senedd Member has called out the Labour Party for failing to deliver on their promises to women born in the 1950s.

Peredur Owen Griffiths said the Labour Government in Wales should be putting pressure on their party colleagues in the Westminster Government to come good on pledges they made whilst in opposition.

Nearly 4 million women born in the UK in the 1950s are losing out on thousands of pounds every year after the pension age was raised from 60 to 66 by the Tories at short notice.

During a plenary question this week, Peredur said it was high time Labour did the right thing.

“Much like the argument about HS2 funding, there was once agreement between Plaid Cymru and Labour that women born in the 1950s had been conned out of the retirements they'd planned for,” said Peredur.

“Women who had carefully calculated their pension pot had the rug pulled out from under their feet by the Tories' premature state pension equalisation policy. This has meant that thousands of women are now spending their golden years in poverty through no fault of their own.

“Now that Labour are in a position to do something about it, after winning the last general election, just like HS2, we have not seen or heard anything yet.

“There was an opportunity to put things right at the recent Westminster budget, but it was missed.

“When it comes to doing the right thing by 1950s-born women, what pressures are you putting on your party colleagues in Westminster to come good on all the promises that you made whilst in opposition?

“Will you also reiterate your commitment to getting justice for these women?”

In response, Social Justice Minister Jane Hutt said she would follow the matter up.
